2009 Berlin Six Day race report

Saturday 24th January 2009

Berlin,  Saturday 24 / 01 / 09:

So,  let's take a look at how the Berlin Six is shaping up after two days (or rather,  two nights!) of racing.

At first glance, German riders Robert Bengsch and Marcel Kalz are in the lead with 97 points. But danger is never far away in a six-day bike race, and skulking one lap down, keeping the pressure off themselves, we see Erik Zabel and his partner Robert Bartko lurking with 93 points, and the wily Swiss pairing of Bruno Risi and Franco Marvulli also lurking, with 92 points. If I didn't know better, I'd think that was two of the favourite teams in the race staying out of trouble, but keeping a very close eye on one another.

Roger Kluge, another experienced Germany track rider, was supposed to be riding with Olaf Pollack. But Pollack fell badly in the Bremen Six, and has a broken collarbone, so Kluge is riding with Belgium's Kenny de Ketele, and they are riding well as a team. The two Danes, Rasmussen and Morkov, are also going well, and the top teams will be keeping a very close eye on this Danish pairing.

But Bruno Risi and Franco Marvulli are the defending champions here in Berlin. This year has not been an easy one for them. They were both disappointed not to have picked up a medal in the Madison at the Beijing Olympics, and big Franco's form seemed to desert him for a while in the autumn. This led to the two of them riding with different partners at the Zurich Six in December 2008, but they seem to have kissed and made up again now, and are riding together again for the first time in Berlin. Equally importantly, Franco seems to have regained his form, and his confidence.
